Training
Little lessons, big confidence
Start with one useful skill, a quiet room and a reward your dog enjoys.
Training can be a pleasant conversation with your dog. Start with something small enough for you both to succeed.
Find the right reward
Dogs Trust recommends reward-based training. Food, play or attention can reward behaviour; what matters is that your dog enjoys it. If you use treats, account for them in the day’s food allowance.
Pick one moment
Choose a quiet place and a behaviour to notice, such as settling calmly nearby. Reward that behaviour as it happens. Good timing helps your dog connect the action with the reward.
Repeat without pressure
Reward each successful attempt while a new behaviour is being learned. Keep the exercise achievable and end with an easy success. A reward should help your dog understand, rather than tempt them into something frightening.
For the next session, note what worked: the room, the reward and the behaviour. Repeat the helpful parts before adding distractions. Training progress does not need to look impressive to be useful.
